Breeding Programmes

Here at Kirkley Hall Zoological Gardens we are proud to be part of several breeding programmes.

Breeding programmes are managed by studbook keepers which monitor captive populations within European zoos to ensure we have a diverse population and make recommendations each year for zoos to breed certain species. Here at the zoo we hold the following species as part of breeding programmes:

  • Red Crowned Cranes
  • Von der Decken’s Hornbill
  • Edward’s Pheasant
  • Radiated Tortoises
  • Pancake Tortoises
  • Ring Tail Lemurs
  • Black and White Ruff Lemurs
  • Red Fronted Lemur
  • Cotton Top Tamarins
  • Emperor Tamarins
  • Bush Dogs
  • Electric Blue Gecko
  • Dumeril’s Boa
  • Utila Iguana

Some of these species we hold as none breeding groups or individuals sharing info on husbandry and other key information to help other keepers look after them.
